News | PCG Confirms Safe Return of Six Fishermen Off Davao Oriental

Six Fishermen Reported Missing in Davao Oriental Safely Return

Mati City, Davao Oriental, February 27, 2026 -- Six fishermen who were reported missing off the waters of Manay, Davao Oriental have safely returned on February 27, 2026, authorities confirmed.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the fishermen aboard Motor Banca “LEIZL” failed to return from a fishing trip on February 20, prompting their families to seek assistance. A Notice to Mariners was issued on February 23 to alert the public.

The fishermen later clarified that they were not lost but were forced to remain at sea due to strong ocean currents approximately 60 to 90 nautical miles from Pujada Island. They decided to wait for safer conditions before navigating back. Communication was also hampered after their radio battery drained, preventing them from immediately reporting their situation.

They were eventually assisted by a fellow fisherman who lent them a radio, enabling them to coordinate their safe return.

Upon arrival, the fishermen were brought to the Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center for medical evaluation and were reported to be in stable condition. Local authorities assured that necessary assistance and support were provided.

The incident underscores the importance of reliable communication equipment and proper preparation when venturing into offshore waters.
